Please read this part carefully when using startup battery.

Apparatus: multimeter with precision to 0.01V and to milliampere. Chargers with stable current and voltage. Content gauge.  Hydrocone type densimeter with density of 1.100-1.300g/cm3.

Why Good batteries taken to be Bad ones

  Batteries are being kept in the car for a long time some months or more so that they run out of battery self discharging.

   Voltage on the voltage adjustor is set to be lower than it should be so that batteries are under charged.

   Runing out of battery for long time use of the electric appliances like aircon,stereo,headlight,etc while engine is not started.

   Batteries are under charged due to extra electric appliances like headlight.

   Problems with the engine, loose pedrail,etc. to cause batteries to be under charged.

   Discharge totally due to engine problems or circuit problems.

The must steps when assembling the battery

   Pour in the battery with the original liquid with a density of 1.28+0.005g/cm3, wait for 15-20minutes. Then check the voltage with a voltage gauge. Voltage should be ≥12.5V and electrolyte error can not be larger than 0.025. even if the battery can be used. If the electrolyte error is larger than 0.025 or the voltage is lower than 12.45V, Battery should be recharged.

   When assembling the battery, please keep the terminals and connectors clean. Positive terminal has to be connected first then negative. Make sure battery is fit in very well and firmly so that it cannot move during the car drive.

   Inspection on the charging system: parallel connected the direct current voltage gauge and the battery. Boot up the engine and raise rev(about 3000rev/minute) and keep an eye on figures of the voltage gauge which should be between 13.5-14.7V. If below 13.5V it means it is under charged.If over 14.7V it is over charged which also affacts the life of the battery. Then the charging system should be inspected.

Note: when using Maintenance Free Battery, voltage should be kept at about 14V, try not to let it pass 14.4V.

Inspection and judgements to the failure of the batteries in use

   Before checking the battery please first inspect the charging system as stated above. If charging system fails, the battery should be recharged or needs a further check.

   For the unstalled battery, first check the voltage with a voltage gauge then the density with a syringe hydrometer. If voltage is below 12.45V, density below 1.25 g/cm3(and density for each division is almost the same), it should be judged to be under charged. it should be recharged timely with 1/10C20 current till electrolyte rises to 1.28+0.005g/cm3 or voltage rises to 16.3V.

   Inspection for charging state. For batteries, whose electrolyte with density of 1.28+0.005g/cm3 and density in each division is almost the same or voltage over 12.45V, we can get rid of the floating charge voltage on surface of the battery: connect volume gauge to the terminals for 3-5 seconds, if it shows “full” or “normal” and stay put, it means there is no problem with the battery. If the pointer falls sharply, we can judge there is something wrong with the battery.

Judgements to short circuit

    Voltage is low in open circuit. Density in some division is lower than the others.

    Bubbles rise constantly or bubbles appears very late when charging. Electrolyte’s temperature is  relatively high.

   When charging,density and voltage do not rise too much.

   Volume of discharge is little, voltage falls quickly.

Note: if voltage in the open circuit is low, density is also low and density in each division is alike. It can be judged to be short circuit and the possibility of “undercharged”. Charging state should be checked again after being recharged

 Judgement,formation,handling and precaution to sulfuration on the plates

 Discharging voltage is low, charging voltage is high, current is little when charging but rises gradually,density is low.

  Positive plates turn sandy beige(normally brown), negative plates turn white and grey(usually grey).

  Charging voltage and temperature goes up rapidly, early gassing. But voltage falls rapidly when discharging.

  Sulfuration is usually taken as accident due to people. Mainly due to too high density, usual under charging, usual over discharged or plates get ahead of the liquid. For slight sulfuration: usually we repeatly charge and discharge or charge with small current for a long time to recover the battery. For serious sulfuration: it can be replaced.

   Steps to prevernt sulfuration: avoid over discharge, charge timely after discharge, strictly control the density, donot fill electrolyte with very high density. If store the batteries for a long period please refer to storage maintenance chapter.
